Man gets 25 years for raping own daughter

A father who forced his eight-year-old daughter to watch pornographic movies and raped her in 2015, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the Mthatha Regional Court last week.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesman Luxolo Tyali said according to evidence presented in court during the trial, the man lived alone with his daughter in his Slovo Park informal settlement home in Mthatha after the victim’s mother passed away.

The perpetrator, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, is unemployed and survives by doing odd jobs as a welder.

He and his victim slept in the same bed in their home.

“A neighbour noticed signs that the little girl was being abused as she would refuse to go home when her father was drunk and would sometimes wet herself while playing with other children,” said Tyali.

“When the neighbour enquired from the victim, the girl confided to her that her father was raping her and would sometimes even force her to watch pornographic movies before raping her.”

Subsequently, the neighbour reported the matter to the police in August 2015.

“The girl was taken to a doctor who confirmed that there were indeed signs the girl had been penetrated on numerous occasions,” the spokesman added.

However during the trial, the accused had reportedly pleaded not guilty but witnesses called to take the stand by acting regional prosecutor Nomfundiso Tuswa, including the victim herself, the neighbour who had alerted the authorities and a social worker, convinced the court that he was guilty. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
