Angry residents of Mantusini village near Libode, armed with placards and knobkerries, protested in front of the Port St Johns police station calling for the arrest of one of the officers.They accuse the officer of being behind the disappearance of 27-year-old Yvonne Mbekwa and her nine-month infant Alutha, who both disappeared on June 5.
At the time, they claim, the missing woman, who hails from Mantusini, had been on her way from Mkhankatho village where she is employed as a domestic worker, to meet up with the father of her baby who happens to be a policeman in Port St Johns.
The protesters were joined by Mbekwa's relatives who together with some community leaders, spent about two hours locked in a meeting with station commander Colonel Mxolisi Ngqola.
"People are scared in the village because he has been threatening them," said Fikile Jama, one of the protest leaders and Ward 7 municipal councillor.
But Ngqola urged the residents to be patient and told them that the investigation was being handled by the provincial office of the police.
"It's not that we are sitting idle but it is being investigated," he said.
The Daily Dispatch reported that burnt human remains and a bag containing Mbekwa's documents and clothes were found inside a forest about 50km from where she was last seen.
