ANC council speaker killed

Raymond Mhlaba municipality council speaker Tozama Njobe was shot six times and killed in Fort Beaufort last night.

Eastern Cape provincial police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci said Njobe was killed at about 22:40 in Fort Beaufort by an unknown suspect. She was killed while sitting in her car.

Soci said Njobe was shot at close range while she and another person were driving from a gathering in New Town, Fort Beaufort.

"She sustained wounds in the upper body and was taken to hospital for medical attention where she was certified dead on arrival."

Soci said the police have launched a manhunt following the murder.

"A murder investigation is underway and police will not speculate on the motive at this time."

The ANC in the Amathole Region expressed shock and sadness after the brutal killing of their fellow member.

In a media statement sent earlier this morning Amathole regional chairman Teris Ntuthu said: "The ANC in the Amathole Region strongly condemns this brutal act and urges the police to do everything possible to bring those responsible to book.

"We also appeal to members of the community who might have information to come forward and assist with the investigation."
