Speaking at a memorial service held at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga‚ Landiwe Phiri said her brother loved music from a very young age.

“Our father had a guitar and Ray loved playing with it. One day he took a plank and a polish tin and created a guitar for himself.

“As time went by‚ our father realised that he loved music. Our father then taught him how to play a guitar. Whenever people asked him what he was studying for‚ he would always say ‘I am learning for the world’. Today‚ many people are crying because he has passed away. I am not surprised‚” Landiwe said.

Phiri died at Nelspruit MediClinic on July 12.

His son‚ Pholo‚ said he would mostly miss his father’s cooking.

“He was a good cook. Whenever he was in the kitchen he would ask me to peel some vegetables for him. I would resist but now I realise that he wanted me to be a better man. I am glad that I did right while he was still alive‚” Pholo said

He said his father played his role in their lives.

“To us as his kids‚ we never saw a people’s person. He played his role‚” he said.

Among those in attendance were ANC stalwart Mathews Phosa and his wife Pinky‚ ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu and singer Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse.
