Cop investigated over shooting of WSU student

Eastern Cape police are investigating one of their own members after he allegedly shot and killed a student in Mount Fletcher over the weekend.

Mawande Mvoko, 25, a final-year Walter Sisulu University student, was shot through the heart and kidneys and died on the spot.

The incident, which shocked the villagers happened at Paballong village on Sunday morning.

According to Mvoko's relative, Zwelinzima Nunu, who was first on the scene, the student was shot through his heart and on his waist.

“Those were shots to kill him, not warning shots. They shot him at the back as he was running away from them. He was shot execution-style."

Mount Fletcher cluster spokesman, Captain Raphael Motloung confirmed the shooting incident and said police were investigating. “We can confirm this and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate for investigation,” said Motloung.

Moses Dlamini, spokesman for Ipid, confirmed that they were investigating the case.

Mvoko was home at the time a group of four police officers arrived unannounced and allegedly started assaulting him. According to relatives, he managed to free himself and ran to a neighbour's house, where there was a vigil, to hide. But after a few minutes he returned home to fetch his phone but another police officer, who was allegedly hiding in the dark shot at him, killing him on the spot.
