A 30-year-old man was arrested after crashing a stolen vehicle into a luxury car – and then trying to steal the other car.

The accident happened at traffic lights at the intersection of Devereux Avenue and Union Street in Vincent, East London yesterday.

Police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said the drama started shortly after 8am when a Corsa vehicle parked outside a workshop in Oxford Street was stolen.

“The vehicle was brought in for repairs by a client of Competition Motors. It was parked just in front of the shop when got in and drove away with it,” Mzuku said.

After discovering the theft, Competition Motors owner Rami Bachar leapt into his car and chased the thief.

“He could not catch up with him. He then called 10111 and informed the call centre officer of what had happened.

“The officer then dispatched members of the Mdantsane Flying Squad – Sergeant Nombulelo Nyobole and Constables Leeto Mqoji and Siphiwo Mbane – to look for the suspect and the stolen Corsa,” Mzuku said.

Meanwhile the Corsa had crashed into a Mercedes-Benz at the Union Street intersection.

“The Mercedes was being driven by an elderly man. After the accident happened the driver of the Mercedes got out of his car to inspect the damage.

“The man in the Corsa also got out and started overpowering the elderly man and attempted to take his vehicle.

“It was at this stage that the Flying Squad members who were on the look out for the stolen vehicle arrived on the scene and arrested the man,” Mzuku said.

Police took their suspect to the Cambridge police station, where he was held for theft and reckless and negligent driving.

He is due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges against him. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
