Initiative to get work for young graduates

In an attempt to address unemployment in young graduates the "Vodacom change the world" programme is giving an opportunity to some graduates to volunteer at any registered non-profit organisation while getting paid by Vodacom.

The programme started in 2011 and this will be the first time it is accepting applicants between 21-35 years old.

Vodacom Foundation acting executive head Rabia Awasi said this year the programme will focus only on ICT and technology graduates.

“The people who will be selected will receive a laptop and a cellphone from Vodacom and the salary is negotiable,” she said.

Elmarie Perreira,41,  has been with the programme for two years while volunteering  at Memeza Shout Crime Prevention in Johannesburg.

Perreira shared her experience saying it helped her deal with the loss of her sister who died due to gender-based violence.
