One dead, a number injured in car accidents

One adult died, another had to be airlifted to hospital while six pupils sustained minor injuries in three car accidents in the Eastern Cape yesterday.

Nineteen other pupils escaped unharmed. Two accidents happened near the Nqunqu Bridge and the other in Ngcwanguba village – both in Mqanduli – while the fatal accident happened in Port Elizabeth.

Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo confirmed that one patient was airlifted to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital while other patients were treated at Ngcwanguba clinic.

Department of transport spokeswoman Khuselwa Rantjie  condemned the continued use of light delivery vehicles or bakkies to transport pupils to and from schools.

“The department will investigate the matter further and ensure the law is enforced,” said Rantjie.
