Security has been beefed up at the Sisa Dukashe stadium ahead of the much-anticipated Premier’s Cup between Chippa United and Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in Mdantsane on Saturday.
To detect fake tickets, scanners will be at the stadium and there will be tight security with more than 170 security guards and police officers roped in.
This is being done to prevent a repeat of last weekend’s deadly Soweto derby stampede that claimed the lives of two fans, while more than 15 were injured outside FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
Fake tickets were blamed for the stampede.
Chippa spokesman Luthando Zibeko said security would be tight at the NU2 venue.
He called on soccer fans to buy tickets at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers stores, saying no tickets would be sold at the gate.
“We have been in contact with security companies and we have been in meetings with police on how best we can intensify safety and security.
“We have also been in consultations with our branches in East London and around the province as a whole to work with us in curbing the sale of fake tickets,” he said.
“We cannot strengthen security without educating our supporters and if fans use fakes tickets they are doing a disservice to the same club they are supporting.”
Zibeko also called on fans to go to the stadium early.
National African Football Supporters’ Association (Nafsa) secretary-general Siyabulela Makunga said: “Football administrators have not focused on safety and security at stadiums.
“As a result we had put this at the top of our agenda at the meeting we held with football administrators at Cosatu House two days before the incident at FNB, and it’s unfortunate those two football lovers died.”
On the upcoming game he said: “We will be campaigning against violent behaviour and late coming at the stadium. We are against all things that jeopardise the lives of football lovers and we are appealing to fans and team owners to take responsibility for safety in and around the stadium.”
Tickets are R20 for children aged 12 and under while adults will pay R60. Gates open at noon.
