Ten people have died on Eastern Cape roads in three separate vehicle crashes in the last 24 hours.
The first accident, claiming the lives of four people, all males, occurred on the N2 near Nqadu on Saturday night.
Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said two vehicles collided head on. He said two women sustained serious injuries in the accident and were transported to the nearest hospital.
In a second accident in the early hours of this morning, the driver of a Fiat Uno lost control and crashed into the steel barrier along Woolwash Road, Amalinda. The driver, who was alone in the car, died on the scene.
On the N6 this afternoon, a sedan carrying eight people travelling from Queenstown towards Jamestown lost control and collided with a stationary vehicle. Kupelo said three children and two adults were declared dead at the scene of the crash.
"We urge motorists to be extra careful on the road. These accidents not only cost lives but stretch our resources in hospitals. We send our condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the three children whose lives have been cut short in the Queenstown accident. The health department will speed up autopsies to assist families preparing for funeral arrangements," Kupelo said.
