Second suspect arrested in connection with council speaker's murder

A second man suspected to have been part of Raymond Mhlaba Municipality Council Speaker Thozama Njobe’s hit has been arrested in Mdantsane.

Njobe, 43, died last month after being shot 16 times in her car in the Fort Beaufort CBD.

Eastern Cape police said a 30-year-old man was arrested on Monday in the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital where he was being treated for stab wounds.

Police did not release details and circumstances surrounding the suspect’s injuries, just that they were not related to the Njobe case.

Police have identified the suspect as Sindiso Wece. He appeared in the Fort Beaufort Magistrate's Court to face a charge of murder and his case was postponed to Monday for a formal bail application.

At the time of his arrest he was under police guard for an unrelated crime.

When she was shot Njobe, the mother of three, was in company of a colleague, Mandla Makeleni, who escaped the attack unharmed.

Njobe was rushed to the nearest hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

The motive for her murder is still unknown.
