Protesting nursing students halt UFH classes

Academic programmes at the University of Fort Hare's nursing department have come to a complete standstill this morning.

More than 300 nursing students are demonstrating outside the university's East London campus demanding the removal of one of their lecturers.

They accuse her, among other things, of running the department "like her own spazza shop" by implementing policies that they claim are not in the university prospectus.

At least three students have been suspended since the protest against the lecturer started on Monday. The students now say they will not return to class until the suspended students are allowed to go back to class. Dozens of armed police are monitoring the situation.

Student leadership is locked in a meeting with the university management to decide on a way forward.

The three students were suspended for their alleged participation in demonstrations aimed at removing the lecturer.

The university management was not immediately available to comment on the matter.
