Arrest in Cairns murder

A suspect has been arrested eight months after the gruesome slaying of Gonubie pensioner Marlene Cairns earlier this year.

Cairns, 75, succumbed to stab wounds when she and her husband Neil Cairns, 77, were both attacked and stabbed by two men in January, during a suspected burglary.

The man was arrested on the run in Knysna earlier this month. The second suspect is still at large.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala declined to give further details, saying the case was still under investigation.

lA Gonubie pensioner was attacked in Second Street on Monday.

The elderly man was assaulted and his hands were tied with cable ties before thieves made off with R90000 in cash and stolen goods.

The latest incident comes two weeks after with the robbery of a businessman in Third Street two weeks ago.

Mqala said police were investigating cases of assault, kidnapping and robbery. No arrests have been made. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
