All the academic programmes at the University of Fort Hare's East London campus have ground to a halt this morning.

About 300 nursing students are demonstrating outside the campus.

They are demanding the removal of the acting head of the department, Nontombi Rala.

They accuse her of running the department like "her farm".

At least three students have been served with notice of intended suspension since the class boycott started three weeks ago.
