'Fake' cops shoot two women dead

Eastern Cape police said two men pretending to be police from Pretoria shot two elderly women dead in Tsomo on Monday night.

Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said the incident occurred in Mdeni Location Gqogqora administrative area.

She said the deceased women were aged 65 and 67 respectively.

"It is alleged that two men who pretended to be police members from  Pretoria entered  one of the homestead and requested to be accompanied to the other house.

On arrival to the second house they allegedly drew a firearm and shot both of the women and they both died on the scene. The suspects left the scene afterwards," Mdleleni said.

Family members of the deceased women had relayed the story to police, Mdleleni said. She said the motive of the murder was still unclear.

Mdleleni said two cases of murder were opened and are currently under investigation.

Mdleleni said Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga condemned the senseless killing of women and vowed that police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators will be brought to book.

Ntshinga is reportedly to have said in response to the murder: "We cannot allow the abuse and violence against the women and children, especially during the Women’s Month and we also appeal to the community who have information to assist the police to speedily solve this matter."
