Dozens of police and private security guards are monitoring the situation at the University of Fort Hare's East London campus this morning.

All academic programmes have been disrupted since the beginning of the week.

Students embarked on a stay away in solidarity with nursing students who have been boycotting classes for the past two weeks.

It still remains unclear whether the students would return to class any time soon.

They have vowed not to, until the university met their demands.

Meanwhile, the university insisted that the demands were unreasonable and had since requested the students to return to class.
