Paediatrician must wait to hear his fate

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Grahamstown has ordered the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to further investigate allegations of sexual assault against a well-known East London paediatrician.

The state was awaiting further instruction on the case from the DPP when he wrote to them this week informing them that police needed to investigate more before he could make a final decision.

The 64-year-old doctor appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday to learn about his fate.

State prosecutor Queode Botha told presiding magistrate Rochelle Sam among other requests from the DPP were the issue of cellphone records which still needed to be obtained from the police.

The doctor’s attorney, Angus Pringle, did not object to a further remand date.

Sam then postponed the matter to October 31 for further investigation and the DPP’s decision.

The doctor cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded to a sex crime. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
