Hijack suspect caught as car runs out of fuel

Police arrested a man accused of hijacking a car in Butterworth in the early hours yesterday.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said a man had offered the suspect a lift at about 5.45am at Zitulele Township, in Butterworth.

“It is not clear where the two were going.

“Once the suspect was inside the sedan, he demanded the car keys from the owner.

“He overpowered him and successfully hijacked the car, valued at about R180000,” said Manatha.

After the owner reported the incident, police followed the vehicle’s trail, and found it in the Butterworth area after it had run out of fuel.

The suspected hijacker was subsequently arrested and is due to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court today.

lPolice nabbed 27 people for drunk driving in Mdantsane this past weekend.

The arrests were made during operation Fiela, a multi-disciplinary government programme set up to fight crime.

Police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said: “We urge motorists not to drink and drive. This conduct puts the lives of other people on the road in danger.”

All 27 are due to appear in the Mdantsane and East London Magistrate’s courts from today.

Three other arrests were made for possession of an illegal firearm, live ammunition and a stolen vehicle. — simthandilef@dispatch.co.za
