ANC Eastern Cape outgoing provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle admitted that as ANC leaders they were arrogant, complacent and ignorant” of the challenges facing the country and the party.
Masualle was addressing delegates as he officially opened the eighth provincial conference at East London ICC Friday night.
Masualle, who is also the premier of the province, preached unity and reality check to ANC members during his Political Report as he officially opened the conference.
Masualle said the time to do endless analysis by the party was over, now was the time to act decisively on the challenges facing the party.
He urged conference delegates to engage the National Policy Conference diagnostic report that was tabled by party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe in July at Nasrec.
He also admitted that corruption was eating away at the party calling for action against both “flies and tigers” as it is done in China where the ANC friend – the Communist Party of China is in power.
“We as leaders of the ANC have assumed the status of being arrogant, complacent and ignorant,” admitted Masualle.
And should the party continue on the path that it was in, Masualle went on, “we are heading the wrong direction”.
This was day one of the much-anticipated conference which will see Masualle go head-to-head with provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane for the party’s top job.
The conference got off to a shaky start as it was initially meant to start at 9am, only to start nine hours later when Masualle presented his Political Report.
Masualle also lamented the demise of the ANCYL saying “the killing of a political movement starts with the killing of its youth wing”.
To this end, he called on ANC members to “bring life back”to the young lions as the province and the country was getting younger.
