Armed assailants shot and killed Nonzwakazi Mkono, 60, and her 28-year-old daughter Kholiswa at their home in Mpindweni village outside Mthatha at the weekend.
The shooting follows the funeral three weeks ago of Nonzwakazi’s husband and AmaMpondo Chief Velile Alfred Mkono, who was laid to rest 672 days after his death owing to a prolonged legal battle over his estate by his two wives.
The woman’s eldest son Sazi Mkono yesterday said he was in Maritzburg, where he works, when two gunmen entered his rural homestead and opened fire on his mother and younger sister.
“The incident occurred on Friday shortly before 8pm. My mother left the lounge where she was watching TV with my twin siblings.
“She went to her bedroom to sleep. While she was preparing her bed two men approached the bedroom window and shot at her. My sister rushed to assist and she was caught in the crossfire,” Mkono said adding the men then fled without shooting his younger brother Likhona.
Mthatha police spokeswoman Captain Dineo Koena said police were investigating two cases of murder.
She said the suspects were still at large.
The Dispatch reported last month how Chief Mkono’s body racked up a storage bill of R450000 at the Eastern Cape Burials Funeral Parlour in Mthatha when he was supposed to have been buried on Saturday November 21 2015.
The funeral could not take place because his ex-wife Noncedile Mildred Mkono, 74, brought an urgent interdict on the eve of the ceremony preventing Nonzwakazi from burying him.
Noncedile died in a car accident last year.
On August 24 the Mthatha High Court dismissed the interdict, paving the way for Nonzwakazi to bury her husband. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
