Nine Grade 12 pupils from Makaula Senior Secondary School in Lugangeni Village outside KwaBhaca are breathing a sigh of relief after they were allowed to go back to school.

The pupils were expelled last week after they failed to attend spring school.

The Eastern Cape education department then intervened as the pupils had been worried that their futures were in jeopardy after the school expelled them.

Today they told DispatchLIVE that they were happy that the education department had intervened and that they would be able to write their matric exams, which will start next week.

Khula Development Project director Petros Majola welcomed the intervention.

“But the principal must still remember that he did not do those pupils any favour by allowing them to go back to school. “Education is the their constitutional right which he violated,” he said.

Education spokesman Malibongwe Mtima said the pupils “are now at school preparing to write their final examinations” after they intervened.
