UPDATE: Report indicates the bus in the Ngqeleni accident may have been overloaded

Latest reports on the Ngqeleni school bus accident have indicated it may have been overloaded at the time of the accident.

Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said Canzibe Hospital attended to a total number of 90 passengers from the 65-seater bus.

Four pupils died when the driver lost control and went over a bridge in Mdumbi village outside Ngqeleni.

One pupil died on the scene and three others died in hospital. They succumbed to injuries they sustained during the accident.

"Four pupils are still at Nelson Mandela Hospital and waiting to go to Bedford on Wednesday. Others were treated and discharged," he said.

The department of transport is also investigating the cause of the accident as there are reports the bus may have had faulty brakes.
