Double murder accused Buffalo City Metro ANC ward councillor Nokulunga Matiwane, 54, and her 60-year-old husband Mthuthuzeli Matiwane’s fate is now in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecutions who will decide whether to prosecute or not.
Mthuthuzeli is in custody awaiting trial having earlier been denied bail while Nokulunga is out on R500 bail. The state is seeking a life sentence on the matter, claiming the murders were premeditated.
The East London Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday that the murder docket had been sent to the DPP’s office in Grahamstown for a decision.
This as the couple made their third court appearance since the August killing of two Reeston women, Nomboniso Twana, 54, and Nombulelo Mpitipiti, 50.
Twana was an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) supervisor having attained employment allegedly through the councillor.
The two deceased women were allegedly kidnapped and shot by Mthuthuzeli before their bodies were dumped over the cliff on the Buffalo Pass Road.
Mpitipiti died instantly from two bullet wounds to the head while Twana crawled into the road where she managed to flag down a passing traffic officer. She died a day later at Frere Hospital after sustaining two bullet wounds to her stomach and arm.
Hours before her death, she allegedly gave a statement to police claiming Mthuthuzeli and another man had kidnapped them and shot them after Mpitipiti failed to pay a monthly kickback to the councillor for allegedly securing her employment.
The case yesterday was postponed to December 15 for the DPP’s decision. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
