WSU students' room catches fire

The room of two Walter Sisulu University students caught fire last night, leading to an emergency evacuation.

University spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said the fire was caused by a stove that was left on in the students’ room.

DispatchLIVE has learnt that the residences at the university's Zamukulungisa site had experienced a power outage and the students had left their room to study at the library.

Student Yongama Mayekile said he and other students managed to put out the fire.

“We gained entry into the room by breaking the door and extinguished it before it spread to other rooms,” he said.

Tukwayo said there were no injuries and there was nobody in the room when it caught fire.

"The response was immediate so the damage was contained. The personal belongings were not burnt but the mattress was damaged and a window and part of the wall is stained with smoke. Students have been accommodated in the same residence,” she said.
