Eastern Cape monarchs and other royals expressed joy when one of their traditional leaders, Nkosikazi Nosandi Mhlauli of AmaHlubi in Peddie, was elected as the new deputy chair of the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL).

Mpumalanga’s Nkosi Sipho Mahlangu, who was the deputy chairman in the past term and Mhlauli, were on Thursday elected unopposed as the new chair and deputy, respectively.

Not only is Mhlauli the first ever woman from the province to be elected to the position, but she is also the first person from the Eastern Cape. Her election has been applauded as the greatest achievement ever for Eastern Cape traditional leaders, its kings, the AmaRharhabe Kingdom, and women’s formations and gender organisations.

President of Imbumba Yamakhosikazi Akomkhulu (IYA), the forum of traditional leaders’ wives, Queen Tina MaDosini Ndamase, congratulated Mhlauli.

Mhlauli has been the provincial chairwoman of IYA for the past 13 years.

Queen Ndamase said: “This proves that women are able to lead. This is a victory in a patriarchal society. We are excited. This proves that women, even in traditional institutions, can lead and show their leadership skills as women as this has been confirmed by the unanimous election of Nkosikazi Mhlauli in the NHTL.”

Mhlauli, a former nurse and princess of AmaMpondo, has been head of the AmaHlubi Traditional Council since 1997. She has also been a member of the ECHTL since 2002 , NHTL since 2005, IYA chairwoman since it inception in 2004 and one of active traditional leaders of the AmaRharhabe Kingdom.

Mhlauli, who was the NHTL’s social development committee chairwoman, is the second woman to be elected NHTL deputy chairwoman.

Contralesa secretary-general Nkosi Xolile and Nkosi Langa Mavuso, deputy chairman of both the ECHTL and Contralesa and AmaRharhabe Kingdom representative, said they were happy with Mhlauli’s election,

Mavuso said: “This is greatest achievement ever. Her election shows maturity on the transformation of gender issues on traditional leadership. She is a firebrand and activist on women matters.”

An excited Mhlauli said she was humbled but happy that the ability of women to lead had been recognised. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
