Taxi driver jailed for crash

A taxi driver was sentenced to five years in jail for culpable homicide yesterday after the illegal taxi he was driving collided with an SA Breweries truck, killing nine people and injuring 13.

The Komani Magistrate’s Court found Whittlesea driver Simphiwe Qwebani, 44, guilty of nine counts of culpable homicide for the May 10 2013 accident.

According to the evidence given in court, Qwebani was driving a Mercedes Sprinter, transporting people from Whittlesea to Mthwakazi village. On the R351 between Sada and Whittlesea, Qwebani hit the SAB truck from the back, resulting in the death of nine passengers.

His wife cried uncontrollably yesterday when he was taken to the holding cells.
