The case against a Breidbach man accused of murdering his wife before burying her under her bed was again postponed in the King William’s Town Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.

Vernon Baartjies appeared before presiding magistrate Nkosinathi Mjekula facing charges of murder.

Prosecutor Pamela Matinise told the court the state was still waiting for a decision whether to prosecute from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Grahamstown.

She requested that the matter be postponed to December 11 for that decision.

The request was granted.

Baartjies has been in custody since his arrest in September.

He was earlier denied bail for the alleged murder of his 36-year-old wife and mother of four children aged between six and 16, Carmelita Baartjies.

A second man, who was arrested with the accused and who was initially thought to have participated in the gruesome murder, was released by the police on September 27.

Police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa  has said the charges against the second man were withdrawn pending a laboratory report.
