A bold new programme will train, support and keep track of about 30000 Eastern Cape teachers over the next two years.

The education department has teamed up with an NGO, the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), to extend the innovative teacher development programme, which will be rolled out next year, in a bid to raise the province’s dismal schoolmarks.

It is aimed at teachers of four key subjects – English home language, English first additional language, mathematics and natural science – and encompasses grades 1 to 9.

According to the department, the plan is to support teachers in their efforts to complete the curriculum at the best pace for the grade using a tracker.

The national programme manager at NECT, Deva Govender, said the aim was to increase the quality and quantity of teaching and learning.

“To attain the objective, we have an agreement with the Eastern Cape to support them using their resources. The support will include building the capacity of teachers, and that will be done through the provision of materials. The materials will comprise lesson plans and a planner and tracker,” said Govender.

The planner and tracker will be used to monitor the quantity of the curriculum covered.

The programme will see 27800 teachers receive support material, while 120 subject advisors and 380 lead teachers will receive training and support to carry out the programme.

She said they chose the four subjects because they were of national and international interest.

“The thinking is that if students can read, write and do maths and science, they will have a better chance in terms of careers.

“We pay particular attention to the foundation phase because we must get education right at the lower grades,” said Govender.

The programme will be rolled out in two phases. Phase one will start in 2018 at the beginning of each term, when teachers will receive their material, subject advisors and lead teachers will be trained and the tracker will be introduced.

Phase two, in 2019, will see the full implementation of the programme.
