Grandmother, 68, found raped and killed in her home

Glen Grey police are investigating a case of murder and rape after a 68-year-old woman was found dead in her house in Tsembeyi village on Saturday.

Nomayeza Goqi was last seen alive on Friday at her house in the village in Cacadu (known until recently as Lady Frere).

Speaking on behalf of the family, Bongiwe Goqi said: “This is painful. Our family is still waiting for other family members who are residing outside of the Eastern Cape so that we can finalise the funeral arrangements,” she said.

Goqi said her grandmother was a loving and caring person.

“She took care of us,” she said, adding that she believed that the person who killed her grandmother was someone who knew her and had been to her house.

“He kicked the window to gain entry and after raping her he strangled her. I don’t know why he killed her because he had already raped her,” said Goqi.

She said police found shoe prints and used condoms near the pile of firewood.

“We want the person who did this to rot in jail,” she said.

Ward councillor Zoyisile Moshani said the slaying had sent shockwaves through the community.

“We last had such an incident in 1998 where an old woman was killed in Bankis. We are going to have meetings to address this,” he said.

Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni appealed to the community to assist the police in arresting the suspect or suspects.

“The woman was found in her house by her neighbours, naked and already dead.

“Police are investigating a case of murder and rape and no one has been arrested,” she said.

She said people with information can contact the police on 0860-010-111. — thembiles@dispatch.co.za
