Amathole District Municipality councillors yesterday pledged to advocate for no violence against women and children for a year, as opposed to the annual 16 days of activism campaign in November and December.

Candles were lit as they pledged their support during this year’s last council meeting at the Calgary Conference Centre in East London.

ADM spokesman Siyabulela Makunga said: “This is in line with a proclamation made by national government. No more are we going to be talking about 16 days of activism, we are now taking 365 days of activism.”

The comes after ADM staff member Thandi Mlambo was found dead in a parking lot at Vincent Shopping Mall.

She is believed to have been strangled before being dumped there.

“We are not necessarily directing this initiative to a particular incident. However, we are encouraging anyone to come forward and provide information so that whoever is responsible for the brutal killing of our colleague can be successfully apprehended and convicted.

“We have got an obligation to the communities we serve to ensure a safe and secure environment,” Makunga said, adding that abuse of women was a serious issue in their local municipalities.

There were 137 reported cases of women abuse in Mbhashe alone, he said.

“We are working with law enforcement agencies to mobilise our communities and provide useful information that will ensure that the culprits are brought to book.”

Makunga said they would continue holding awareness campaigns in an effort to help bring an end to violence against women and children.

Meanwhile, council approved the extension of the declaration of the district as a drought area for two months because of the persistent drought. — zikhonam@
