Counselling offered to boys who found man’s corpse

Trauma counselling has been offered to four young boys who were heading out to assist youths undergoing initiation in the bush when they discovered the body of a man buried under rubbish.

The boys, aged between 11 and 12, stumbled upon the body on the side of the R102 near Mount Ruth outside Mdantsane yesterday morning.

The boys, dubbed “squires”, were on their way to deliver breakfast for the abakhwetha (initiates) in the nearby bushes when they made the gruesome discovery.

The distressed boys raced to the R102 and flagged down provincial traffic officers Sipho Flepu and patrol partner Christopher Plaatjies, who were patrolling the road.

Plaatjies said they were heading towards Mdantsane when they saw the panic-stricken boys.

“We stopped and they told us that there was a dead body lying on the side of the road in the bushes.”

Flepu suspected the body was dumped from the back of a bakkie a few metres from where it was found.

“We saw the tyre tracks and traces of blood showing that the body was dragged before it was covered with rubbish.”

When the Dispatch arrived at the scene just after 11am yesterday, the boys were giving statements to the police.

Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said a murder case was opened at Vulindlela police station.

Mzuku said: “The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the investigating officer, Captain Samuel Xhamani, on (043)765-6909 or 082-441-9597. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za and zikhonam@dispatch.co.za
