Matric pupil commits suicide

A matric pupil from Schoemansdal close to Louis Trichardt in Limpopo committed suicide on Friday after failing matric.

The Nkomazi local municipality appealed to parents “to be vigilant and give proper counselling or refer these vulnerable children to social workers for professional help.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends.” (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1702089023175433&id=111731395544545).

South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) spokesman Janine Shamos previously told TimesLIVE that pupils should not see their matric results as a matter of life or death. (https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-01-05-failing-is-not-a-matter-of-life-or-death/)

“Matric learners need to remember there are always options. There’s always something that can be done‚ even if it means rewriting a subject. Even if you failed the whole year‚ there are always options.”

SADAG offers counselling seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. Concerned parents‚ teachers or pupils can contact a SADAG counsellor toll-free on 0800 12 13 14‚ 0800 567 567 or 011 234 4837. You can also send an SMS to 31393 and SADAG will call you back.

The organisation said if someone has shown at least five of the symptoms listed below for about two weeks they might be contemplating suicide (http://www.sadag.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1840&Itemid=153):
