Some useful savings for consumers

It is indeed a happy new year as certain food items show a noticeable drop in prices when compared to last year.

A pocket of potatoes, which cost R11.99 last month, will now set the consumer back R10.99 – a R1 saving.

Butternut dropped from R12.99 to R11.99, with a loaf of brown bread now costing R8.99, a R2 decrease from the December price of R10.99.

A litre of milk dropped from R10.99 last month to a lower R9.99 this month, while a dozen large eggs now costs R25.58, a R3.60 decrease.

For the last two years, the Saturday Dispatch has been charting the prices of basic household goods at three different supermarkets. The prices are published on the first weekend of every month.

January prices are:

l A pocket of potatoes now costs R10.99, a R1 saving from R11.99 last month;

l Butternut dropped to R11.99, as compared to R12.99 last month;

l A loaf of brown bread is now a cheaper R8.99, a difference of R2 from its previous price;

l Milk now costs R9.99 per litre;

l A dozen eggs is now going for R25.58, a R3.60 drop from last month’s R29.58;

l A kilogram of meilie meal remained the same as last month at R8.99;

l 750ml of sunflower cooking oil saw a slight price increase, going from R15.99 to R17.99; and

l A kilogram of chicken pieces remained the same at R43.00.
