The official opening of this year’s academic year at the University of Fort Hare’s East London campus has been suspended.

This after students started singing just a few minutes after university  vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu took to the stage to address students and staff today at the official opening for the year.

Earlier, students had threatened to interrupt him during his address.

They want the university to immediately accommodate more than 400 registered students who are still without accommodation.

The SRC told DispatchLIVE that students say they would not go back to classes until all the students are accommodated.

This is a developing story.
