I will not resign‚ says defiant Zuma

President Jacob Zuma has given the strongest indication yet that he will not resign from office and would‚ instead‚ subject himself to a vote of no confidence against him in Parliament on Thursday.

In an interview with the SABC broadcast from the Union Buildings‚ Zuma said he will not resign from office.

He also indicated that he would have “no problem” if the parliament that elected him voted him out.

Zuma used the interview to defend himself and reject the decision by the ANC’s top leadership that he be recalled from office.

“There is been done in a manner that I felt I have been victimised here. I said I disagree with the decision. I did not defy‚” Zuma said.

He repeated his complaint that the ANC leadership did not tell him what he did wrong.

“My problem is that nobody provided me with what I have done. I don’t understand. I feel your decision is not right. I said I disagree with the decision you have taken‚” Zuma said.

He summarised the talks he had between the ANC top leadership that led to a decision on Wednesday by the ANC caucus that it would support a motion of no confidence against Zuma brought by the EFF.

The ANC said once Zuma is removed‚ ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa would be sworn into office.

Zuma said he disagreed with the notion that he had to be removed purely on the basis that the ANC had a new president.

“There is no evidence. No one has taken me through a process if I have done something wrong or say here is an issue. I need to be convinced‚” Zuma said.

He accused the ANC leadership of immature politics.

Zuma concluded his interview with a veiled threat to ANC leaders‚ saying their decision to remove him was ill-fated.

“I think we have been plunged in a crisis which I am sure my leaders will regret‚” he said.
