Massive number of arrests this week

1250 arrests were made in the Eastern Cape this past week. Arrests were made for a variety of crimes including robbery, assault, murder, rape and the illegal possession of firearms.

Captain Khaya Thonjeni, of the SAPS, said: “Efforts to eradicate lawlessness, improve the safety of our citizens through targeted deployment of members throughout the province yielded successes with more than 1250 arrests in the past week.”

21 suspects were arrested for murder, 143 for assault and 25 for rape and will be appearing in various courts throughout the province.

23 liquor trading outlets were found to be not complying fully with the liquor trade licence regulations.

309 dagga plants were uprooted, 75 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of crack cocaine and of khat were confiscated from drug dealers.

Thonjeni said that in total 150 suspects had been arrested for the possession of “illegal weapons and ammunition”.

A collaboration between the Traffic Services and police proved “fruitful” when vehicle stop and checks on major roads resulted in 10 suspected stolen vehicles being recovered, 117 J534 fines were issued, 21 “warrants were executed” and 60 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.
