Zandisile Mgaga, who is a sangoma, was instructed to take off a doek he had on inside the courtroom by orderlies, saying men were not allowed to wear hats in courtrooms.

Mgaga refused to take it off explaining that it was in accordance with his culture as a sangoma to always wear a hat or doek.

“If I  take it off my ancestors will be angry with me. I don't want to see their wrath. I’d better leave this court but my heart is bleeding because I wanted to attend this case involving the death of my daughter,” said Mgaga as he was leaving the court.

He claimed the court was discriminating because the court allowed other leaders of church to wear their religious hats.

"Why do they not want us sangomas to wear ours as part of our religion”?

He said that in previous court appearances, he was allowed to wear his hat inside the courtroom.

The accused, Olwethu Mbalwa, is also a sangoma but they do not know each other.
