A body of 22-year-old man has been found washed up on the Eastern Beach - four days after he was swept out in the sea by a strong rip current on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the body was spotted west of the lifeguard's shack by a Johannesburg couple strolling on the beach before 10am.

“He was swimming while his two friends were playing on the sand and got into difficulty when a heavy current swept him out. The information we received is that he was a non- swimmer so he panicked and tried to swim against the current and got exhausted.”

Mqala said an inquest has been opened following the drowning. The man was one of 10 people reported to have drowned in the province.
