Minister calls urgent meeting on sanitation at schools

The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has called for an urgent meeting with education MECs and HoDs to discuss school infrastructure, with special focus on the eradication of unsafe ablution facilities at schools.

According to the Department's spokesman, Elijah Mhlanga, the department will be conducting an audit of sanitation facilities at schools within a month and develop an emergency plan which will be sent to President Cyril Ramaphosa and National Treasury for consideration.

The "emergency plan" comes after the death of five-year-old Lumka Mkhethwa who died in a pit toilet at Luna Primary in Bizana.
