Life behind bars for brutal child rapist

Duncan Village brute Mveleli Faneme, 36, who snatched a seven-year-old girl in front of his shack at knife point and repeatedly raped her while holding her hostage, was yesterday jailed for life by the Bhisho High Court.

Judge Feziwe Rengqe rained justice down on Faneme saying: “This act you committed was a humiliating, degrading and traumatic invasion of someone’s body, an appalling and outrageous crime which threatens every woman, especially the poor and vulnerable.

“She is now a psychologically traumatised child and treating such is very difficult, especially at such an age.

“This rape deprived her of her normal growth, development and functioning. Her trauma is severe and permanent.”

The child was psychologically shattered by his gruesome deeds.

Faneme was such a remorseless liar that he forced the state to bring the victim and her friends to court to give evidence.

The judge said he had failed to take the court into his confidence, showed no remorse “and resorted to a pack of lies which then subjected the victim to the trauma of having to come and testify”.

Rengqe said the little girl was not coping well in school and was failing in her school tasks.

Rengqe added the little girl was also showing signs of other social and personal problems.

The judge said Faneme was a poor witness who had lied to court and even went as far as trying to discredit the child victim who had endured the trauma of facing her rapist in court.

The rape happened on the afternoon of February 28 2017 in C-Section, Duncan Village, when the little girl was playing with friends in front of Faneme’s shack.

Faneme was arrested the next day after the primary school child informed her mother of the brutal attack.

Faneme had called on the group of young girls to come inside his shack promising them sweets.

The others ran away, according to the state’s case, but the victim was “dragged” in by the rapist, whose name will be added in the national register of sex offenders.

Faneme, wielding a knife, threatened to hurt her if she screamed.

The judge took into consideration that Faneme was a first-time offender, but said the gravity of the offence, the interests of society and the prevalence of rape across the country had also to be taken into account when deciding on the sentence.

Rengqe said he saw no prospect of any rehabilitation. —
