East London police are looking for five armed suspects who stormed the upmarket Hair Weave Masters (HWM) beauty shop in Vincent and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, Peruvian weaves worth R20000 and cellphones.

Police spokesman captain Nkosikho Mzuku said the armed robbery, which took place on Sunday at the Douglas Road business , was led by an “attractive looking” woman who entered the shop alone. She pretended to be interested in purchasing the weaves before pulling a gun on unsuspecting staff. Her accomplices then entered and looted the salon.

“The suspects fled the scene in a white Toyota Avanza. Our detectives and other crime scene experts are busy combing the crime scene,” Mzuku said.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the midday robbery, said Mzuku.

Three frightened staff members, who were speaking behind a locked glass door supported by a burglar gate, were too scared to open the gate, and told the Daily Dispatch yesterday that the owner would call the newspaper to comment.

But at the time of writing, the owner had not called and could not be reached.

The business shares a boundary fence with a private security firm, Tyeks Security Services. Tyeks regional manager Xolile Sondishe said they had not heard anything.

“This is the second robbery in five months at our neighbours and, funny enough, we never heard a thing in either robbery.”

Melanie Hugo, 49, who runs Blue Zoo Hair and Beauty at number 8 Douglas Road, said her staff members saw a lady going inside the HWM store and then going back outside to fetch three or more men.

Hugo said it was only when Red Alert security firm and the police pulled over that they became suspicious.

“Both robberies happened on the days we don’t operate, which is Thursday and Sunday. However, we had a private job with models who were doing make-up inside on Sunday.” — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
