Taxis granted leave to ferry pupils to school

In a shocking turn of events, Eastern Cape transport bosses have announced that taxis will be allowed to work on roads that were closed off as of next week -  but only to transport pupils to school - while adults might still have to walk to work or find alternative transportation.

This was announced by transport MEC Weziwe Tikana this morning.

"The decision is specifically taken to allow for the transportation of learners to school and all other operations are still suspended," said Tikana.
The Daily Dispatch has previously reported that Police Minister Bheki Cele and Tikana announced a decision to ban taxis from operating on the R61 between Mthatha Port St Johns, the N2  between Mthatha and Tsolo and the R396 road between Tsolo and Maclear until a lasting solution to taxi violence was found.
More than 60 people have  been killed through taxi violence since 2016.
Since the ban was imposed however, thousands of commuters have been left stranded with some having to walk all the way home from town.
