The rivalry between amaBhungu and iindlavini last Tuesday saw residents of two villages - KwaZulu and Mkhandlweni –  near Bizana attacking each other. The fight is believed to have been triggered by confrontation over lobola issues between two families.

The fight left four men and a woman dead and one without his private parts. Others escaped fearing for their lives.

MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture Pemmy Majodina said these cultural groups - amabhungu, iindlavini and others - were supposed to be entertaining people instead of killing each other.

"Also, lobola is between the two affected families and it's meant to unite them. It cannot be allowed to be a source of fighting which results in the killing of five people," said Majodina.

She was speaking on behalf of the Eastern Cape government during the mass funeral service at Mkhandlweni village in Mbizana on Saturday.

EmaXesibeni SAPS cluster commander Brigadier Mthuthuzeli Mntukushe said: “Five cases of murder have been opened. A police task team has been deployed to the areas since the attack but there have been no arrests yet."
