Siyahluma stokvel from Amalinda will represent the Eastern Cape at the grand finals of the Stokvel Cooking Challenge to take place in Gauteng later this year.

The stokvel reigned supreme at the regional finals at the East London International Convention Centre on Saturday.

Mdantsane’s Siyazama stokvel came second and East London’s Ilanga Lam Lisakhanya stokvel third.

The event, the brainchild of Move magazine, is sponsored by White Star and Royco. It offers stokvel groups from across the country an opportunity to showcase their cooking skills, with the winners receiving a share of R40000 in prize money.

The overall national winners will pocket half of that amount.

White Star Super Maize Meal’s Mapaseka Koetle-Nyokong and Siphokazi Mdlankomo, from Royco, were the judges in the Eastern Cape competition where, for starters, entrants had to cook biscuit pap and veggies.

Next, the groups were required to make mutton stew with savoury pap. A stokvel is an investment group who regularly contribute an agreed amount of money from which they receive a lump sum payment.

Siyahluma stokvel will be jetting off to the finals in Johannesburg in August.

Numerous efforts to speak to the weekend’s winners were dashed when event publicist Masego Potelo yesterday refused to allow the Dispatch to speak to the Siyahluma stokvel saying “they are not media trained”. — mandilakhek@
