Santaco will operate bus routes to assist people

As thousands of bus commuters are left stranded in the province, South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said they will operate in the bus routes in the province “in the best interest of the people”.

Santaco provincial chair Noluntu Mahashe told the Dispatch that the taxi council has a “mutual understanding” with bus operators and they will lay a helping hand since their workers are on strike.

“We don't want people to suffer, we will help them where we can,” said Mahashe.

Mahashe added that in the meantime, they will add more taxis to operate in the routes used by buses and said the taxi council sees no reason to negotiate for it.

Yesterday, Mayibuye Transport Corporation spokeswoman Bongi Solwandle told the Dispatch that no taxi association proposed to use any routes Mayibuye buses operate in.
