An elderly couple from New Life near Reeston were left devastated when their new RDP house was burnt to ashes this morning due to an electric fault.
Nokwayintombi Meqe, 59, was left with only a few slightly burnt clothes to her name after she helplessly witnessed her newly built RDP home burnt to ruin in less that a year after she was given the keys.
Meqe said she spent the last minutes in her house charging her cellphone.
“I came here with three friends. I charged my phone on top of the fridge then went out to visit a neighbour. I was shocked to find out people saying my house was on fire. I couldn’t believe it,”said Meqe.
BCM fire department inspector Jerome Naidoo confirmed that the cause of the fire was electrical.
BCM Human Settlements inspector Sandi Diphu said the family should contact them for assessments before an alternative accommodation could be confirmed.
