Tutu praises De Lille's unifying role in society

Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu have spoken out against Patricia de Lille's fallout with the Democratic Alliance.

"Leah and I are very sad that Patricia de Lille’s services will be lost to the City of Cape Town‚" the Arch said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

"Although she represented a particular political party‚ she played an important role as a unifier in a society still bearing the scars of its divided past."

The party on Tuesday booted her out as Cape Town mayor‚ after a prolonged battle. De Lille already has two matters in the high court related to her disciplinary hearing and on Friday she plans to go to the Cape Town High Court in an attempt to prevent a new mayor being elected. An acting mayor has been named in the interim.
