7 hurt as bakkie transporting kids and BCM waste lorry collide

Seven people including a four-year-old were seriously injured in an accident yesterday on the Mdantsane Access Road.

It was just before 3pm when a Buffalo City Metro waste management truck collided with a bakkie that was transporting school pupils at the traffic lights near the Empilweni clinic.

East London police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Mtati Tana said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened.

“Four children aged between four and 10 and three adults were injured. All were taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition,” said Tana.

Eastern Cape health spokesman Siyanda Manana said three pupils and one adult were taken to Frere Hospital.

The others were taken to private hospitals.

“We can confirm that they are being attended to.” Those at Frere had all been X-rayed to examine the extent of their injuries, Manana added.

According to eyewitnesses, the bakkie was travelling to Mdantsane with the pupils on the back. The truck allegedly hit the bakkie on the front passenger door but continued travelling forward. “The truck ended up lodged between sets of traffic lights,” said Simon Ngxala, who was driving towards Mdantsane.

BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese confirmed that a metro truck was in an accident.

“The driver of the truck was injured and taken to hospital,” said Matebese.

Officials managed to keep traffic flowing while clearing the accident scene. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
