ANC all set for its 4 000 delegates

President Jacob Zuma will deliver his political report later today as delegates arrive to attend the ANC’s three-day national general council (NGC) in Johannesburg.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe announced at a press conference yesterday that 67 buses had been hired to transport more than 4000 delegates.

The Eastern Cape’s 403 delegates left for Johannesburg yesterday morning – the second biggest contingent after KwaZulu-Natal’s 513.

Northern Cape remains the party’s smallest province with only 125 branch delegates who qualified to take part.

“The NGC will be officially opened when the president of the ANC, comrade Jacob Zuma, will deliver the political report,” said Mantashe.

“The NGC will also receive the organisational report, which will assess the state of the organisation, the functioning of our structures and progress made in the implementation of resolutions of the 53rd National Conference.”

After Mantashe presents the organisational report, treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize will present the party’s financial report to the NGC.

The NGC is convened every five years, midway between national conferences.

Mantashe said it was meant to assess the implementation of ANC resolutions from the national conference, their adoption into government policy and their translation into programmes.

“The NGC does not change policy, but reviews implementation of resolutions and can adjust programmes to deal with challenges and problems and identify areas where new policy is needed,” he told journalists yesterday.

Mantashe said registration for the conference started yesterday as the first group of delegates had already arrived in Johannesburg by 9am.

“We are currently busy with the registration of delegations, following the pre-registration that has already been done in provinces,” he said.

“We are pleased with the speedy and smooth registration that has characterised the accreditation and registration process thus far.”

Mantashe said several ANC veterans had already confirmed they would attend the NGC, including former Rivonia trialists Ahmed Kathrada and Andrew Mlangeni, as well as Gertrude Shope.

“As is the tradition within the ANC, we have also invited fraternal organisations, notably the former liberation movements MPLA , Zanu-PF , CCM , Frelimo and Swapo who have confirmed their attendance.

“We also expect in attendance representatives of the Brics embassies – Brazil, Russia, India and China,” said Mantashe.
