ANC chairman’s guards probed

The bodyguards of ANC OR Tambo regional chairman and Mhlontlo municipality council speaker Xolile Nkompela are being investigated for allegedly kidnapping an official from the department of social development last month.

The incident took place in a village outside Tsolo.

The official, Xolisa Bobi, who works as a service office manager at the department of social development’s Qumbu office, reported the matter to the police on February 21.

Police spokeswoman Dineo Koena confirmed the matter. “A case of kidnapping was opened and is under investigation.”

Bobi alleges Nkompela’s bodyguards attacked him with tasers (which produce high-voltage electric shocks) and threw him into their vehicle during a squabble last month. He said he was parked at Ntshiqo village with other people when Nkompela’s five car convoy arrived.

“A bodyguard driving a Mercedes told us to move as he felt uncomfortable driving between the vehicles. We understood his concern so we moved,” said Bobi.

“Nkompela arrived with other security guards, he opened the window and yelled at me that I must move my car. I told him the way was open. He got out of the vehicle and came to me. The young man I was with tried to block him telling him he should stop doing what he was doing.

“He went back to his car – seconds later, four bodyguards came towards me. They manhandled me, when I tried to fight back they threatened me.

“They tasered me and took out their rifles. I decided to cooperate and they threw me in one of the SUVs they travelled in.”

Bobi said he was driven to Nkompela’s home.

“At the gate, he called the bodyguards and told them to return me to my car, which they did,” said Bobi.

Efforts to get detailed comment from Nkompela were unsuccessful at the time of writing.

However, when spoken to briefly yesterday morning he said allegations that his security detail had assaulted Bobi were not true.
